I just brought a new camera :o

Do you make money from your phography? Music photography specifically, was wondering a bit after reading `Obsidian-Fox's articules, names [link] I get that most of your work is indie in the true sense of the word so there may no be a lot of money involved, not sure though.

Assuming you've made any in concerts and performences etc. what's the best you've had? And how much can you make from your other stuff, promo photos and all.

Sorry to pry, none of my business
At least none of my business yet.

Congratulations on the new camera!!

obsidian fox is an obsessed stalker, i don't know what his problem is. i've told him to fuck off and leave me alone, and i've banned him from leaving comments on my site, and blocked him from my email as well, seeing as he felt compelled to also send me emails. He's reported all my photos and had them removed from the category of concerts and musicians even though they were the most popular EVER in that category. they moved everything, even photos with no manipulation because of that bastard. I've heard from other people that he continually slags me off on forums and in his journal. sorry but i have no time for him and i could care less what he has to say. He neither shoots bands as often as me nor does he seem to actually know the people he is working with.

sometimes i can make some money from promo shots, but i don't believe in charging too much as most the bands are completely skint, i would rather do some nice photos to make a good band look good for free than worry about whether or not they can pay me. it's no way to make a living, i know, but i love the bands, i love the band members, and i have made quite a lot of friends.

I did sell a photo recently for 400 euros though. and i usually get my travel expenses and a pint or two. i shoot a lot of charity gigs as well, and the photos from the local bands and the charity gigs are regularly in the papers and music magazines and on posters, websites, CDs, band pages, etc. occassionally i'll do a shoot for someone different, like i did some burlesque shots for a girl i know for 20 quid. Two of the photos are here :iconbaby-shambles: i've got a couple weddings lined up later in the year. i just wing it, if people don't have money i know what it's like, i'm not going to cheat them.

Wow... sounds like a vendetta! Fairly intense of him, wouldn't have guessed it but now I can see how he could be a... douche, sounds like a vigilante cop who never really does the right thing, but is very motivated to keep doing it, which is the whole reason I frown on vigilante cops. (and angry mobs etc.)

But yeah I definately get what you mean, all the kids who aren't indie by choice don't have money to throw around, I have mostly focused on the sound side with work that I've done with musicians the last couple years, recording fairly (but not particularly) good quality music with them to release on cds cheaply, so far I've done all the work other than writing and performing and was given $50 for one of those "jobs" afterwards, and just out of interest, worked out that I got paid 3 cents an hour, now I'm doing it for 10 :D

But yah, I did the album art, or the pictures that went inside the case and on the CD myself, I'd say it ended up looking better than it sounded but it was still an achievement and I'm just happy to be creating and encouraging the young musicians in this city.

ahhh speaking of sound, i shelled out my own money to make 50 CDs for the Ballarats and they broke up! i had the covers printed and everything. so i've got stacks of CDs i have no way of getting paid back for. It wasn't even my design on the cover :XD: ah but i love Corb, he's one of my best mates, so. His new band should be up and running by March, he says.

I would charge £60 for promo shoots, that includes post production. I don't believe in charging local bands to shoot their gigs, that's ridiculous. They don't get paid most of the time. But with the promo shoots, many bands haven't got the money. I've offered some of the bands that i like who need promo shots to do them for free providing i retain all the rights and artistic licence to my work. Actually i have sold some photos, that wasn't true, i just forgot, but i shoot the Mephisto Club and i've been paid very nicely for that. In return they get a disk of all their photos and can use them any way they want. Little Comets have saved christmas for my family this year, and when i go on tour with them they pay all my expenses and they bought me a ticket to see the Mighty Boosh Live! even though they couldn't afford to go themselves. they're absolute stars! real rock stars too! they're signed now and being played on the radio and telly all the time, check out their video on youtube 'one night in october'

but like you said, encouraging the young musicians is the ultimate goal. when schools are cutting funding for arts and music, it's the least we can do. Rock and roll really does save lives x
