This was Simon. But all good things come to an end. 

On Thursday morning of the 13th of February 2014,  the short and passionate life of Simon Binks came to an end. Simon lived his life to the full, he burnt hot and brighter than the sun. One of the most talented, craziest, happiest, and loving people I have ever known, and it was my greatest pleasure to have been friends with him as he touched all who knew him. The first photo I ever posted on deviant art was of Simon, and he was the one who put the lemonade in jazzy lemon. I love him so much, I'm crushed, heartbroken and I can't believe I'll never see him again - but just the thought of his laugh can make me smile. 

Thank you, Simon, for showing me the meaning of a passionate life. I will never forget you, you will be in my heart always.

A Day in the Life

yes, i'm doing really well at the moment, although i'm

still pretty sick i've managed to get out and about.

    here is a synopsis of my past week.
    Mon - gig at the Riverside with Grandfather Birds, Night of Sevens, and Ajimal

(really it was Fran) and then Jan talked me into going with him

and some other friends to the head of steam for some drinks.

Jan was telling us about his adventures in Amsterdam, i was

trying out Paul's film lens held up to the front of my camera.

Alex and Hope wanted to go home, but i didn't want to leave

with Jan's story untold and i kept telling them hang on, hang

on! so i could hear more of it, until they walked out so i had

to leave. Then on our way home we came across a young lad who

had been with his mates and were attacked by some chavs. we

gave him a jumper to hide his conspicuous pink freshers top and

actually passed some of the people who had jumped him earlier.

we found a policeman and told him what happened and then walked

him to his block of flats. his friends showed up with some

blood and bruises and ripped clothes, but nothing really

serious. and after leaving them we walked on towards my flat

where we met a lad called Donovan who shares a birthday with

the famous Donovan Leitch who is doing his dissertation on the

canon and the graphic novel. he had beer and no cigarettes, and

we had cigarettes and no beer, so he ended up walking all the

way back to mine with us and talking about the work he was

doing and some other writers like poe and kerouac til the sun

came up.

    tues - there was a party at mine for a friend's birthday.

well it didn't start out being a birthday party, we'd just rang

aorund people to come and it happened to be Scott's birthday!

we had soup and cake and everything but people only drank the

alcohol and we used almost every available drinking utensil in

the house, including plastic cups and willoware teacups.

everyone who came was a musician except one lad named Brian who

is a filmmaker. Jan got my film scanner to work on my computer

and asked me, do you like Animal collective, jazzy? he and

Stephen were also telling me about Joaquin Phoenix's David

Letterman interview which i never saw so we were watching it in

the livingroom when people came in and started having things to

say about it that the three of us didn't agree with. however my

two best friends, Jan and Stephen, left in a taxi around

midnight. everyone else stayed up watching star wars until

about half four in the morning. i got up and tidied the flat

and anyone left who was still sleeping got up and went home.

    wed - i met Jan and Stephen at the tyne bar where i also

did a small photoshoot with Danny and the other DJs. Jan gave

me a smashing little polaroid camera that can take double

exposed images and a mix tape cd and we all walked along the

quayside to the other side of the river to gateshead together

talking and listening to Jan who kept us entertained with his

true stories of his life, and he helped me up on his bike so i could cycle it around a bit, singing

i've got a bike you can ride it if you like.. then we got a cab back to my flat for

some sleep.

    thurs - jan was working so stephen and i went to a gig at

the cluny and then to the head of steam afterwards, but it was

full of chavers so we went across the street to north bar where

my mate Marcus was spinning some tunes. then a fight broke out

and it took nearly half an hour for the police to arrive. at

one point they fell on top of Sarah. but it was better than

television. i got a cab home with some neighbours who are in a

band together - including Dolly and Martin, and Martin came

over for a coffee, and was playing my guitar. i said - i've got

another one. so i brought it out and he said John Perry, this

is the john perry guitar. i used to have one like this! but

this WAS his - the very same one! he'd traded it in about 8

years ago at Windows, and i bought it at windows. we looked at

pictures of guitars on the internet for about an hour and then

he went home.

    Fri - i went into town for a gig, but discovered i had no

idea where it actually was. i also had a late gig at the o2 so

i met some people at the dog and parrot for a drink beforehand.

Jack, one of the young lads who comes to the gigs had me sit

next to him and meet his friends. Also i took some photos of

friends outside and inside and one lad was showing me his shoes

saying, get a picture of these beauties! then i went to the

academy for The Traitors and Abduction of Margaret. i was

shooting the drummer for the Traitors when i accidentally

unplugged the guitar, and they turned around and looked at me

and i hurried up and plugged it back in, and got a big grin

back. when the gig was over the punters who came to see Dirty

Pop were giving me a bit of a hard time, and although Jaimie

had promised me a lift home, i was far too ill and being

bothered by too many people so i went in the cab with Alex and

Hope and by the time i went to bed it was 6 in the morning.

    Sat - i had a 12pm booksigning to go to for my friend Simon

Donald's new book and then i came home for a nap before going

out to shoot Frankie and the Heartstrings - the gig was sold

out and i had to find a ticket for Stephen only because Jan was

at work and Dann wouldn't come out. After the gig a fight broke

out from some people coming out of the ship inn, and we watched

and listened to it, as well as several people up on byker

bridge until they went running away because the police came and

i said goodbye to stephen and walked on home. on my way home i

came across a man who had both hands stuck in his letterbox.

his girlfriend was trying to help him get them out and i said,

hello! do you need any help? and they smiled and said oh no,

we're fine! and i said, well..okay. and started walking away,

then thought, i've got my camera with me and i came back with

the little one and said, i'm going to take your photo. and they

smiled. but it was apparent he was NOT going to be fine, so i

ended up stopping whilst we discussed the best way to free him.

i asked his name and he said Charlie...you can call me Chuck -

Stuck Chuck! haha. his girlfriend was called Lindsay. Charlie

was getting very agitated with her and he was dying for a

cigarette, so i held it for him - but it had butter all over

the end cos we'd buttered his hands really well. i told him i

had some experience with letterboxes as i deliver newspapers,

and he said have you ever come across anything like this in

your travels? and i said no! this is a first! anyway it took

over an hour - we buttered him up, put ice on his hands on the

other side of the door to reduce the swelling, pried the

letterbox open with a screwdriver and then soaped up his hands

and pulled the skin taught so he could manoever his way out and

one hand was free so he had another smoke. and then we did the

same to the other and they said come in for a glass of wine! so

i did and we had wine and smoked, petted the cat and talked and

they added me on facebook. great way to meet people. so i went

home with my frankie photos but it was about half 4 in the

morning when i got there.

    Sun - Today Malachi, Hope, Alex, Stephen and i went to see

Back to the Future at the Empire. strangely enough it wasn't

that crowded. But it was as funny as ever, so 80s!

Jan would have loved to be there i'm sure as he is a very 80's person.

Then Stephen cycled home and we walked into and home from town where we been

sat drinking wine and smoking.And I was talking to Jan on fb and we're not going to  

paris anytime soon but we should still be going to see Toro y

Moi in Edinburgh on the 31st!

It's Not Enough For Your Heart To Break

I'm not well at all. I've been back to the doctor and i'm going to be taking some new anti-depressants. It's a struggle just to leave the house most days, but i'm still getting to some gigs every week, and i've been uploading the roughs from the gigs to my flickr account.

i've got no interest in much of anything. but i know it's only temporary.

this too shall pass.

Moving .... please buy a camera?

I have to move house, from my house by the sea that i've lived in for 7 1/2 years to a shared flat in Newcastle this week. how i'm going to fit 5 rooms of stuff into one little room, i have no idea. I won't even know if i'm actually getting the flat until wednesday and i'm supposed to move in on thursday so they could change their mind. I won't have the internet for a week or so, but on the upside i'll be closer to the gigs. if i actually do get this flat.

I have far too many messages and deviations to look at (about 10,000 altogether), i may have to delete them all and start over when the internet is set up again.

Breaking up is hard to do. Too hard.

i really need some dosh so if anyone wants to buy one of my cameras i'd really appreciate it.

Apologies....and updates

The deviation stacks are working the way they used to now, so that's a relief! however the favourites/comments and journals stacks are still horrid. There needs to be a way to turn off some and leave others on and at the moment there doesn't seem to be

Due to deviantart taking it upon themselves to make it harder to use the site if you have a paid account i cannot possibly go through all the deviations and i was already 10,000 messages behind.

they have made it virtually impossible to look at the deviations anymore, the stacks were fine, then they changed it and if you open a set of stacks they don't fit on the screen, and freeze my computer. now i can't get through the latest deviations.

i had always used favouriting art i like as a way with communicating with people since i can't answer all the messages, but now i can't even do that.

i'm so sorry. i wish they had never done this.

but i love you all and appreciate all the favourites and comments.

Brat pack superstar Corey Haim died of a drug overdose on the 10th of March. He was just 38 years old.

Happy Accidents

Did you know when Oliver Postgate designed Bagpuss that he had intended him to be a marmalade cat? but when the special ordered material came back, it came out pink and cream by mistake. thus the most important, the most beautiful the most magical saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world was born. but emily, oliver and everyone else loved him.

actually this has nothing to do with me, i just saw it on telly the other night.

but i had dropped my camera and broke it and the lens two weeks ago. the insurance company is picking it up tomorrow sometime between nine and five. my posh flash had quit working properly so i sent it back for repair. i still had my d60 but the lens was a bit wonky. i had also lost the battery charger for it! so i got a second-hand lens and a new battery charger by the next week, and i was shooting the foxes gig last monday when the perspex on the flash started smoking and caught on fire! bloody hell can anything else go wrong? i was advised not to use the flash at all anymore. i think it got some dust in it when it was stored. the lad in the shop said he hadn't seen anything like it in the 5 years he worked there. well i didn't HAVE any other camera to use, and i didn't have any other flash except one i got free when i bought one of my russian film cameras on ebay. i think it's worth about a fiver. and i had this gig coming up to shoot for the magazine on saturday night, so i thought well, i'll have to take it then. i was a bit anxious about the gig, and everything going wrong. then saturday morning my partner skipped out on me for good, leaving a dear john, or dear jazzy i should say, letter in my laptop. i mean i could see it coming for ages, so it wasn't really a surprise, but still i was considering not going to the gig at all. i mean, not only was i in the middle of a family crisis, but the flash wasn't dedicated, and i wasn't even sure if it would work. i even went so far as to call one of my good photographer friends and ask him would he shoot the gig? and when he said no, thank you. i decided well i best get my skates on. or get on the bus at least.

and i got some of the most remarkable photos i think i've ever taken! the flash was a bit dodgy and some of the photos came out as half frames, but i figured it out pretty well in the end, and it was such a good gig that i was quite happy when i got home. and i was running like mad and caught the bus so i didn't have to stand in the cold for another half hour on the way home. so that was lucky too!

Gutted

I broke my camera today. i was shooting photos of the Champagne Charlies and the strap got tangled in my scarf, and when i pulled on the scarf, i pulled on the strap and i dropped it. BANG! the lens came off and broke, the flash is knacked, the auto focus is fucked. I'm fucking gutted.  i hope the insurance will cover it because i'm skint. oh why are they closed on a saturday?

But considering people in Haiti have lost E V E R Y T H I N G...
i'm lucky.
i wish i felt less selfish and more lucky though.

i'm overworked and stressed, and yes i do suffer from mental illness like a lot of the people who are musically and artistically creative. i've only wanted to use deviantart as an escape from the pressures and problems in my life. a place i could share art and the music of the bands i shoot. my uncle has a terminal illness, as well as my friend, both of them have young families. whilst my health has been much better in the last few months, i am currently depressed and anxious. i live a long way from my family and i'm often lonely, and i try to laugh and be happy because if i didn't i'd cry and never stop. but i have been hurt and taking out my frustration and anger on others and i'm very sorry for that. i don't understand the groups and different ways of communicating with people as there are so many icons and it is all very confusing. sometimes i feel like life is too hard for me, but the alternative is a frightening thing. i want what we all want i think. i just want to be loved. how selfish of me.

but on the whole, people have been so kind and i would like to thank everyone for the favourites and comments. i am unable to comment or reply to all so i choose to favourite works as my way of communicating with my friends here. i do have a lot of friends, the kisses and cuddles i receive from them save my life i'm sure. and i appreciate every one of you who has made my life richer just by being here. Thank you so much x
